#PinkFloyd Chat Help

Welcome to Pink Floyd Chat! In case you were wondering, this is an IRC chat room. What is IRC? Click on the following links to find out:

· Are you getting "Cannot join channel" errors? Scroll down or click here for help.
· Are you getting "Your own modes prohibit you from sending that type of message" when trying to private message? Scroll down or click here for help.

Basic Commands

Here are some basic commands to get you started with chat. Commands are not case-sensitive, but are shown here in CAPS for clarity. All commands must begin with the / character, which tells the IRC server that you are issuing a command rather than posting chat text.

NOTE: The chat server is being upgraded, so many commands are changing. Please read this article for the latest updates on commands.

Command
Description
Example
/join #pinkfloyd This is how you join the channel #PinkFloyd when you are already connected to the chat server but are not in the chat room.
/part This allows you to exit (part) the channel but not disconnect from the server.
/quit This is how you leave the channel and disconnect from the chat server at the same time.
/me <action> This is how you emote on IRC chat. It displays your chat text as an action instead of a line of dialog.

If your nickname is Floydian, then typing:

/me loves Pink Floyd!

...would show up in the chat room as:

Floydian loves Pink Floyd!

/NickServ REGISTER <password> <e-mail>

This will register your current Nickname so no one else will be able to use it. A Nickname is the name you want to go by in chat. Your Nickname registration will expire after 21 days if it is not used and identified to for that long (see IDENTIFY command below).

/NickServ REGISTER MyPassword MyEmail@webchat.com
/NickServ IDENTIFY <nickname> <password>

This will identify you as the owner of a certain nickname, giving you full access to that registered nick. You do not have to be using the nick to identify to it.

/NickServ IDENTIFY MyPassword

(Identifies you to your current nick)

/NickServ IDENTIFY MyNick MyPassword

(Identifies you to the nick "MyNick" no matter what nick you are currently using).

/NickServ HELP This provides online help for the NickServ commands available.
/Nick <NewNick> This will change your nick from the one you are currently using to a new nickname.

/Nick Floydian

(This will change your nick to "Floydian")

/MSG <nickname> <message> Send a private message to "nickname" (a user) without opening a different window. (Or double click on the name of the person, this will open a new private window with that person.)

/MSG Floydian Hey you!

(This sends the message "Hey you!" privately to the user named "Floydian")

/QUERY <nickname> <message> Same as the MSG command, but opens a new window to contain the private messages. /QUERY Floydian Hey you!

(This sends the message "Hey you!" privately to the user named "Floydian")

/MemoServ SEND <nickname> <message> Send a memo to "nickname" (a registered user). You can send memos to registered users whether they are online or not. Users will be notified that they have new memos when they log on and identify to their nick, or as soon as the memo is sent if they are already logged on to the chat server. MemoServ emulates an internal email system.

/MemoServ SEND Floydian Hi! How was the show?

(This sends the message "Hi! How was the show?" to the user named "Floydian")

/MemoServ HELP This provides online help for the MemoServ commands available.
/Ignore <nickname> This will ignore all the messages sent from that particular person.

/Ignore Floydian

(This prevents the user with the nickname "Floydian" from being able to contact you. You will not see messages posted to chat by this user nor will you receive private messages from this user.)

· Are you using a chat client, such as mIRC, and get one of the following error messages when you attempt to join the chat?

  • #pinkfloyd Cannot join channel: Only registered, identified users can create channels.
  • #pinkfloyd Cannot join channel: Must identify to your nickname to join an unmanaged channel.

For some reason, the server does not allow unregistered users from joining empty channels or channels without operators if you are using a chat client other than the java chat client on this site. To resolve this, either register/verify and identify to your nickname or join the chat room through the java client on this site.

· When trying to private message another user, are you receiveing the following error message?

  • Your own modes prohibit you from sending that type of message.
  • By default, the server blocks your ability to send and receive private messages for security reasons. If you wish to private message with another user, type the following command:

    /umode -Mm

If this does not resolve the problem, then the user you are trying to private message with should enter that same command if they have not already done so. You (and the person you wish to private message with) may also need to register your nick(s) if you are using an IRC client other than the java client on this site.

For any extra help, please ask one of the helpers or operators in the channel to help you out. Helpers (voices) have the + sign beside their nickname and operators have the @ sign beside their nickname. Contact us at webmaster@pinkfloydchat.net if you have any questions or comments.
